The Hideous Ones..

Here is my submission for Gardening While Intoxicated - Your Least Favourite Plant: pelagonium or geraniums.. I used to plead with my mother everytime we attended a nursery to replace those hideous plants. My aversion to them really has no logic except for the fact that I can't stand them. When you mention geranium I always think of those potted white plastic hanging baskets left out to wither and die, murdered by most Canadian homeowners for their ease of care. It says easy to care for, but it doesn't look after itself. Many Canadians buy great numbers of these hideous white plastic hanging baskets and then leave them out to die, by mid-June these scorched martyrs look pathetic and beyond quenchable thirst. I believe that these sacrificial geranium plants are provided in nurseries across the land just for the sole purpose of sacrifice to the sun gods and warn many plants to not grow here. In defense of my mother, she never purchases or keeps them in these white geranium coffins, but instead always in a tasteful display with much colour and care. I know these can be beautiful flowers and have seen them in great arrangements. The Martha Washington variety never lasts on the nursery shelf for longer than 1 week, and most scented varieties are gone within 2 making the killing almost sport like. I will just not be participating in the geranium sacrifice this summer.

I agree on the geraniums. I plant a token few each year, just because my Dad always had them. What I do shun are yews and junipers. No yews clipped into round balls, please!

Aw now come on!! I love the pink colored
geraniums done up in Marthas pretty pots or ivy geraniums hanging in metal hangers filled with moss on the fence and in galvanized buckets with white lobelia or purples...and.. and. But you are entitled to your opinion because this is your site. :)Mine last all summer and are at their finest in Oct. when I am ready to toss them!!

I used to dislike geraniums because I associated them with boring red or white flowers and that strange scent they have.

Then I discovered a whole range of pinks, purples, apple blossom, speckled ones. And I also discovered that they need far less watering than pansies and petunias, they don't get leggy, and they keep blooming into October. So I'm actually a self-taught geranium convert.

(Converts are the worst, aren't they? They'll actually try to convince you you're wrong because they used to feel the same way.)

I only like geraniums in pots lined up on my back step. I have a pink one though in a container that was really a small grill that looks like a pig.
I like the ones with the variegated leaves, the scented ones and the MW ones also.
My friend in Washington state has a greenhouse and has been propagating them for a while. I would like to do with all my favorite plants. I tried to overwinter mine, but ran out of room on the windowsill.

Its funny but after picking that photo I was thinking, maybe I should get a few geraniums, then when I jumped up sweaty and screaming, C told me I was just dreaming.. Thank god.. I understand about converts, When my stapdad anf I quit smoking we swore we would never be "THOSE" people, and I have caught myself once or twice. For my mom it is Pansies that she can'r stand, I know she is at home looking at my pansy pictures and shaking her head in disapproval. The way to keep pansies from getting leggy is to pick them, everyday all the time and be BRUTAL they love it.

There are some great species pelargoniums, with beautiful flowers, and even tiny, unscented, leaves!

Check this out: Pelargonium tetragonum bloom.
